Services, commerce and the 4th District
Porto Alegre is the state's services center. Law, accounting, engineering and consulting firms are spread across the Historic Center, the Avenida Carlos Gomes area and neighborhoods such as Moinhos de Vento and Três Figueiras. Wholesale and retail trade supplies cities all over the interior, and the city's healthcare network serves patients from many regions of the state, buying from distributors, laboratories and maintenance providers.
In innovation, two addresses come up often. Tecnopuc, the science and technology park of PUCRS, gathers technology companies and research centers. And the 4th District, a former industrial zone near downtown, now hosts initiatives such as Instituto Caldeira, which brings together traditional companies and startups.
Industry in the metropolitan region and the Sinos Valley
The metropolitan region has a diversified industry. Canoas is home to the Alberto Pasqualini Refinery, known as Refap, and an industrial hub around it. Gravataí has an automotive complex with suppliers set up nearby. Novo Hamburgo and São Leopoldo, in the Sinos Valley, have a historic tradition in leather and footwear, with the whole chain of machinery, components and chemicals that came with it, and São Leopoldo hosts Tecnosinos, a technology park linked to Unisinos.
Beyond the metropolitan region, the Serra Gaúcha, with Caxias do Sul, is an important metalworking hub, and the interior of the state has strong agribusiness, from grains to animal protein, as well as an agricultural machinery industry. Many companies in the capital sell to these hubs, and vice versa.
Business associations and the rebuilding after the floods
The institutional landscape includes FIERGS (the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Sul), Federasul, the Porto Alegre Commercial Association and Sebrae RS, which hold meetings, courses and missions. The platform has no partnership with these organizations and does not replace their work.
The May 2024 floods hit the capital and much of the metropolitan region hard, and many companies had to start over, rebuild stock and, in some cases, find new customers and suppliers. For anyone going through this process, expanding the B2B contact network beyond the usual radius is a practical way to diversify.
Why the online format works for companies in Porto Alegre
Within the metropolitan region, the BR-116 highway and the Freeway carry much of the traffic between Porto Alegre, Canoas, Novo Hamburgo and Gravataí, and a customer visit can take the whole morning. Outside the state, the bill is even higher: airfare, lodging and days away from the company. Before planning the next sales trip, calculate the cost of getting there and compare what each meeting costs at an out-of-state trade show and at an online round, with the value of your time included.
In the online round, you receive a schedule of short meetings with companies suggested by the matchmaking and talk by video, one after the other. Contact details are only shared when both sides mark interest. The trip, when it comes, is saved for the customer who has already shown they want to move forward. The step by step is in how a business round works.
A short meeting calls for a focused introduction. Build yours with the 60-second pitch generator and practice before the round.
