Not every connection becomes business straight away — and that is fine. The secret is in how you handle the relationship after that first contact.
Be specific in the follow-up
Instead of "great to meet you", recall a specific point from the conversation: "I loved hearing more about project X you are working on". It shows you were genuinely paying attention.
Offer value before asking for something
Share a contact, a relevant article or a referral before asking for a sales meeting. Lasting business relationships rarely start with a direct sale.
Be patient
Some opportunities mature in weeks, others in months. Keep the contact warm with occasional updates, without being pushy.
Formalize the next step
Whenever possible, end each interaction by agreeing on a concrete action: a call, sending a proposal, an introduction to someone else on the team. Contacts with no defined next step tend to go cold.
